Penalty kicks keep the Bears at bay

Mersea Island travelled to March Bears on Saturday for the first league game of the season, against the EC1 West Champions from the previous term.

With the pitch on the smaller side, this played into the hosts hands, with the majority of play being squashed across the middle of the field. Both teams traded blows – and penalty kicks - across what was a very physical game up front. With both teams not looking likely to score, it was Mersea who were the first team to break the chains and get on the try scoring sheet on the stroke of half time. A lineout inside the red zone went to high to Captain Ollie White, and the subsequent drive allowed Nic Woodhead to barge over for his first. Halftime was 6-13 to the Islanders.

With Mersea dominating territory and possession in the first half, March grew into the game across the second, with Mersea not getting a touch of the ball for the most part. However, with high tackles a plenty, the Islanders defending resolute, and Laurence White knocking over every 3 points on offer, the game drifted away from March as the score board pressure started to tell. Mersea settled the affair when Woodhead went over for his double after a pick and go close to the line. At full time the score was 9-24 to Mersea and a happy bunch of lads on the bus journey home.

Player of the match was shared between both Laurence White and James Goldring. Laurence for his grass cutting tackles and accurate boot which kept the score board ticking over. And for James, for getting the valuable go forward the Islanders needed for both of the tries in the match.
